Siding

Siding covers the most square footage of your home than any other material besides its frame. Along with insulation, it works to keep the elements out and your comfort level within. While it’s functional, it’s also a way to express your style! At McAmis, we can help you decide what type of siding is right for you and your home. We can help you find a type of siding that will work for you and your budget.

While not as commonly needed as roof repair, siding repair is definitely a service that can be needed from time to time. It’s important to inspect your siding throughout the year. Look for any sign of damage, rot, or discoloration.

Some common causes of siding repair are heat damage, water damage, and insect damage.

The most obvious source of heat damage can occur due to fire either on or near your property. Grilling too close to your house can also affect your siding, especially if it’s vinyl. In some extreme cases, vinyl siding can even be damaged by a neighbor’s high-efficiency windows reflecting the sun.

Though it sounds strange because siding is meant to keep the elements out of your home and is exposed to rain, water damage can actually happen to your siding. If you see mold or mildew growing on your siding it needs to be taken care of immediately. Signs of mold and mildew include black, white, or grey spots on your siding.

Insects damage can also occur. If you’re a homeowner, you’ve heard all about the dreaded termite. While termites feed on rotting wood, they can damage other types of siding too. If your siding suffers from termite damage, it’s wise to consider replacement after you get those little pests taken care of.

While vinyl is the most commonly used siding material, there are many others to choose from. Some types of siding that are commonly used include:

  • Vinyl – this material is popular because unless it is damaged by an outside force, it’s basically maintenance-free. You never need to paint or stain with this option. Vinyl is affordable and won’t break your bank account. It can withstand all types of weather conditions so is widely used across the country.
  • Wood – Wood siding gives you the look of shingles and is also known as wood clapboard siding. Depending on the type of wood you go with you can leave it unpainted, or paint it the color of your choosing.
  • Fiber Cement – Fiber Cement siding is a fairly new addition to the choice of materials in the US. It’s being used in around 15% of new construction builds and has the benefits vinyl and wood have to offer combined.
  • Metal – While it’s a little more pricey than vinyl, metal siding is highly durable and is resistant to weather, rot, and fire. However, metal siding offers little help in regards to insulation.
